The Apple key is a special function key found on keyboards for Apple computers. The key features an Apple icon, but also features another quirky little symbol that favors a diagram of an infinite highway on-ramp scenario or perhaps a flower.

This same symbol also figures prominently in various software menus throughout the operating system. So just what the hell is this thing and what does it mean to the user?

Can you believe this mark actually references interesting Swedish outdoor attractions or features, such as campgrounds? Check this delightful anecdote by Andy Hertzfeld over on folklore.org for the full details! Of course, if this symbol does nothing for you, and you’d rather a key that features only the Apple icon, that can be arranged, too!

It’s difficult to come up with a small icon that means “command”, and we didn’t think of anything right away. Our bitmap artist Susan Kare had a comprehensive international symbol dictionary and she leafed through it, looking for an appropriate symbol that was distinctive, attractive and had at least something to do with the concept of a menu command.
