jQuery Mania!

An image of the jQuery logoI’ve been a fan of jQuery since around the time it started creeping into Drupal back in the early 5.x days. The philosophy of progressive user experience enhancement with graceful degradation in the absence of JavaScript is something I think everyone can agree makes the web more exciting these days.

Right now at work, I am currently working on building a series of micro photo gallery engines based upon various jQuery plugins, and as with previous jQuery based projects, the process couldn’t be more fun! Building such web features is exactly the kind of front-end design and development that appeals to me, because it is extremely back-end agnostic. I can apply the same kinds of tricks to static XHTML, or PHP driven pages, content management systems, and even Pythonic web applications!

Not to mention jQuery’s creator, John Resig is a really cool guy with a kind of pure, experimentative, and inquisitive hacker background that I tend to admire a lot in my fellow geeks.  If you’re interested in JavaScript libraries (a topic I am frequently asked for advice about), then I would strongly recommend you look into jQuery, and if you like to parse dead trees, check out Learning jQuery and John’s book, Pro JavaScript Techniques.

Also, if you want to see some neat web experiments which run the gamut from web scraping to RSS feed training, check out John’s project page!
