Tacos and Sushi Subreddits, Oh my!

In case you’ve been living under the HTTP equivalent of a moss-covered boulder, you’ve likely encountered the notion of news done twenty-first century style, through various social network-ish community-driven news websites. While I’m not even of the proper demographic to enjoy the adolescent shenanigans and concerns of websites like Digg or 4Chan, I do enjoy a daily dose (or two) of what is without a doubt, the best and most eclectic news website on the planet, none other than reddit!
reddit is one amazing platform for pushing out news in bite-sized (read: links and a thumbnail image) pieces on everything from Bacon to Religion. It truly is What’s new online! What’s more, you can also comment on each link, and vote the links up and down, while gaining valuable karma points in the process- the site represents what the readers have deemed most important at any given time through these features.
Besides the neat content and features, reddit has a cool alien mascot (shown above at left) who often changes in the header graphic to represent popular stories, significant events, or just sometimes the thoughts of the neat artist dude who draws him. :-)
For some time now, anyone with a reddit user account has been able to create their very own “subreddit”, or community on the site, and open it up to news related to a particular topic, from their World of Warcraft guild’s goings on, or favorite musical artist, to the scandals occurring in their hometown government.
Well, now those cool cats behind reddit, have plunked down some new, even hotter features, which are quite nice- among these features are the ability to customize the appearance of your subreddit via CSS, and even have your own header graphic!
After recently helping a reddit user with the styling of their food related subreddit, I figured I’d make a couple of food related ones of my own, and so I made the Tacos subreddit:

If you love the practicality, versatility, and just plain yum of a nice Taco, then feel free to check out the Tacos subreddit… I’ll be adding things there, and occasionally commenting, and encourage you to do the same!
If your palette tends to run a gear or two above Tacos in sophistication, or you’re simply a citizen of Japan or hipster from Seattle or Silicon Valley, there’s also a new subreddit devoted to one of my favorite foods from Japan that happens to share the same out-of-hand eating experience that Tacos deliver, but with a distinctively Japanese twist, and that’s Sushi:

At the Sushi subreddit, you’re free to talk about your favorite kind, chef, location, or share recipes. I tend to prefer vegetarian Maki, but have been known to also chow heavily on some actual uncooked sea creature stuff, too.1 I expect Sushi and Tacos to fight a good battle in popularity- I created each of these subreddits last night, and already Tacos has stolen the lead with 7 subscribers!
I owe a shout to the reddit guys, who I’ve mentioned here before for their gracious gifts, and of course repeated thank yous for open sourcing their fine code. I am always happy to help the project out with various little bits of documentation and ideas. Also, big shouts to my newfound tortilla compadre, and inspiration for the subreddits I set up, donbueno, who helps moderate the Nachos subreddit! If you take Tacos as seriously as I do, there’s no reason to not give Nachos some lovin’ too. Be sure to tell em Shumizzle sent ya! ;-)
Lastly, I enjoy the reddit code so much, that I’ve also built a little site for my home town called MetaBoone, that offers most of the coolness that is reddit, but geared towards the Boone, North Carolina area, and surrounding high country. It’s just a little side project for now, but it has a deck of 52 aces up its sleeve as well…
- Now you should be aware if you are not, that Sushi refers to the type of sour rice used, and not to the various and sundry sea creatures accompanying said rice. Plain sea creatures without rice are called Sashimi. Also, so long as you dine at good restaurants, preferably those closest to the sea, the risk of eating most kinds of sushi is very low- I’ve never had a problem thus far, and have eaten all kinds of Sushi at over a dozen establishments all over the country [↩]
