Kevin Mitnick began social engineering, or perhaps discovered his first engineerable situation at the age of 12. He realized he could bypass the punchcard system used for the Los Angeles bus system: by buying his own punch, he could get free bus rides anywhere in the greater LA area. Social engineering became his primary method of obtaining information, whether it be user names and passwords, modem phone numbers or any number of other pieces of data…
(From the Wikipedia article on Kevin Mitnick)
I got my own business card from the man, myth, and legend some time ago, when one had only to send Kevin one’s IP address and password — before the cards started costing 5 bucks a pop (well worth that price regardless). The card is thin steel, and in addition to being imprinted with the business contact details for Kevin’s company, Mitnick Securty, it contains a functional pop-out lock pick set:

If you’re fortunate enough to meet Kevin in person at a conference or at one of his security talks, he’ll offer you a card for free. Otherwise, you’ll have to mail your IP address and password,1 a self-addressed stamped envelope, and one Abraham Lincoln head to the address as indicated on the Mitnick Security website.
The cards cost him plenty to be manufactured, and so he’s obviously just recouping the cost of producing them. Being that folks like myself just want to have a piece of memorabilia associated with the most infamous computer hacker in history, and we cannot possibly afford to hire him, he can’t keep giving ‘em away like conventional cards- so definitely don’t balk at the cost.
Mine stays in the underground fortress vault, along with my 20 some odd pounds of Krugerrands, 10 years of food rations for 4, UAV RF signal interference units, and compliment of man portable directed energy weapons. If you are wondering about the practical use of Mr. Mitnick’s business card, let Barry “The Key” Wels, show you that the card can indeed open opportunities for you, in more ways than one…
- You cannot omit this information- he’s very strict about the protocol for getting a card these days! ;-> [↩]
