My longtime friend, former employer, and consulting client Mr. Ethan Anderson of Boone Takeout Express fame, has always been passionate about showing me his excitement for a certain flavor of woodsy dwellings based upon simple construction materials primarily revolving around Intermodal Steel Building Units (aka steel shipping containers).
Ethan has frequently brought out a Dwell Magazine, and pointed to these simplistic, but exciting structures, exclaiming, “I want to build one of these!”. It is with great delight, that I report he is officially well on his way to achieving a dream he’s often shared whenever we’ve hung out and chatted.
In his typical high-energy style, Ethan has not only got an excellent example under construction, but he’s also formed a business around the idea, called Dwellbox, LLC, and is currently blogging about the progress of his construction.

I can’t wait to catch up with Ethan in person, behold this wonder of modern architecture, and talk to him about the experience. This mode of building is something I am also quite excited about, because it relates very much to my ultimate idea for a fun business as well.
Make sure to stay tuned to the Dwellbox blog, and follow Ethan as he continues in his trend of very high energy and innovative accomplishments in the Boone, North Carolina area and beyond!
Best of luck with your project, and rock on man!
UPDATE: Ethan and the gang got some nice press over at ISBU News! They’re the second project in the state of North Carolina approved to use ISBUs!

I can’t say enough good about the DwellBox group and especially Ethan Anderson for his vision and trust in such a new building technology.
These guys are doing everything right and this adorable, simple architecture will soon become an icon and example for the real people and real building contractors in the U.S.
This is not show, hype or an art project. This is the real thing and we look forward to the DwellBox expansion throughout the United States.
You will see much more of the DwellBox guys soon at CubicInspirations.com
Thanks for your comment, Barry!
I’ve known Ethan for almost ten years now, and have always enjoyed hearing him describe this specific vision.
I had no doubt given his associations, focus, and high energy, that he’d pull this off, and I hope to see the project reach the level of acceptance it deserves.
Thanks for the Cubicinspirations.com link, as well!
Our hope when we discovered the abundance of these ISBUs and the implications that they could be re-used as a resource to build structures that benefit those in need was just that, green building and sustainability.
This example of simple eco-friendly construction is refreshing considering the direction our nation tends to go with exploiting the concept and importing pre-fabbed units when we could be providing jobs and shelter by using our domestic stock of ISBUs building up in our ports.
