Slippery when Mac Classic

Dropping Acid for the Third Time!

So — in case you do wonder: my viral marketing, search engine optimized, solar-powered Aibo dog ran the Godin Banarama algorithm to generate the working title for this bit of entertainment courtesy of the fine folks at The Web Standards Project.

I know: how in the hell might web standards be entertaining?!

Well, if you take the latest Web Standards Project Acid test in your browser of choice, you'll very likely see some funny and interesting results, especially once you see the reference rendering depicting what the browser ought to be rendering.

I did just that, and just now! With not one, but three different browsers which I use on a particular intel based Mac. Here are the results, and they certainly speak for themselves.

First, you should see the reference rendering, demonstrating an as-yet-to-exist browser handling "web 2.0" stuff...

The Reference Image

Easy enough, right? Some multi-colored squares, a counter that is dynamically updated, and some other nifty bits...no big deal? Well, let's just have a look:

Firefox

The Acid3 test in Firefox 2

As you can see from the above, Firefox version 2.0.0.12 scores 50 of 100, and actually earns a solid second place out of the three browsers sampled. Not too shabby for the Gecko rendering engine!

Safari 3

The Acid3 test in Safari 3

Safari 3 is fairing just a touch worse than Firefox, scoring only a 39 out of 100. I don't think these cats are LOL if you know what I mean... This is OK, because Safari's rendering engine, WebKit (also a browser) is very very nice, and will redeem itself in just a moment.

WebKit Nightly Build

The Acid3 test in WebKit

So, here we are at the latest and greatest WebKit nightly build from www.webkit.org. This is SVN trunk version 30790, and clearly it is kicking some major "web 2.0" rendering ass, scoring a phenomenal 90 out of 100! I am a huge fan of the WebKit rendering engine, and this performance is one of the main reasons why. NOTE: Don't let the Safari version in the screenshot fool you- that's the way the about dialog appears in WebKit...

And there you have it- which browser on Mac OS X supports all the standards correctly? None of them. Some come closer than others, but all have a good ways to go towards interoperability and standards support.

You might also want to go check out the previous Web Standards Project test, Acid2, and try to make a little smiley face with your current browser. I am betting it will look a little odd, too.

I know- I know... my testing was unfair! I didn't include Opera! My bad, and apologies to the folks using Opera on OS X...all ten of you.

Oh, and of course, if you want a really good joke, you need only to load up the Acid3 test in your favorite (or most despised) version Internet Explorer! Doesn't matter what version you pick- it looks like shit in all of em!
