A country band from Saint Petersburg? A group of cowpokes by way of Russia and calling themselves the Leningrad Cowboys? Nah- these guys are neither actual cowboys, nor do they hail from Russia.
If you haven't yet met these chaps out on the vast digi-sprawl of our intartubez, then please kind visitor, allow me to introduce significant tilt-o-whirlage to your plane of reality in the form of a downright freaky musical act hailing from of all places...Finland?!
They're an 80s band- in that they got their start back in the late 80s anyway...they have exceptionally long hair styled into what I would describe as the concave-mega-spike-from-hell- their suits are two-toned and striped, usually black and yellow with red. Their shoes also feature tips which are essentially mirror images of their uber-pointy hair- yes, in all there are three spikey protrusions per band member!
They wear clothing with flame motifs...they've even their own brand of beer! Folks, you just don't get powerhouse bands like that here in America- imagine: ZZ Top Ale? Def Leppard Lager? I am not seeing it. But damn if Leningrad Cowboy beer doesn't seem like the kind of brew you wake up next to in a ditch- you've got one crumpled can per blurry memory of the night before littered about you, and the distinct feeling of having been trampled by a couple dozen cattle. Awesome!
OH- what about the music, you say? No- I don't say. I cannot say. You just have to experience it for yourself. Like that dreaded first Rickroll - where you're just thinking, damn- what just happened here?... you'll have to experience these masterful musicians for yourself, (maybe one of their tunes that features accompaniment by the Red Army Choir) and thank me later.
So what do you say to the person who's heard and seen it all in music?
Oh yeah, they've got some excellent movies, too!
Well Comrade, you've made it this far- now how about taking the plunge and experiencing some first rate soviet bloc era cultural readjustment courtesy of the 'Cowboy's take on an old Lynard Skynard (play some Skynard!) classic- savor the bizarre nature of multiple Weird Al Yankovics Finnish style:
